Everything I Ever Wanted to know about Love & Sex I Learned from Indie Rock: PART DEUX
The muthafuckin' saga continues! Are you bored of it already? I hope you don't mind that I am
taking this one & running with it.* I mean if nothing else, you
are getting yourself some seminal band songs for your collection, right?
Sebadoh -- On Fire
I used to think Lou Barlow
was my soulmate (remember THAT song? Yeesh, that one was kinda
scandalous.) This is quite possibly the best picture of LB I've ever seen. Usually he looks a little molester-ish but here he looks like Ira Glass' brother from another mother.) I think Sebadoh are the originators of the "emo" genre. I mean, dude's all messed up inside & he really lets you in on his inner turbulence - no holds barred.
Lou's somewhat
twisted views on sex & relationships definitely shaped mine,
especially during my formative college years. (All that
I'm-so-messed-up-how-can-you-love
-someone-like-me type stuff. And
you're-a-liar-too-but-I-still-love-you-even-though-I'll-probably-break-
your-heart-but-maybe-you-can-save-me...from myself!) I like to think I've grown up a little but let's face it, I am still that goddamn disaster.
The Replacements -- Skyway
Holy
crap. This one is a killer. Cause he sees her up in the skyway &
pines away for her, hoping to meet her someday. Then one day he goes
up to the skyway but she's not there CAUSE SHE'S WALKING DOWN THE
LITTLE ONE WAY -- WHERE HE CATCHES HIS RIDE EVERYDAY! Tragedy. But
you know he'll just meet her another day...so it's not all that sad now
is it? So stop crying! They're totally gonna meet & fall in love
-- just not today!
(Oh & I've been to Minneapolis & the skyway was very disappointing. It's just a walkway. It really DON'T move at all like a subway.)
And for the hell of it, I'll give you another Paul Westerberg 'n the gang classic that you hardly ever hear: The Replacements -- Within Your Reach
PS - I used to have a total boner for Tommy Stinson -- look at how adorable he is there on the left! (Actually they all look pretty adorbs. Aww.) Did you know that Tommy now play guitar with Guns 'n Roses. Which means he never plays at all. Kidding!
He now has a band called Vintage Gorilla Head. Jesus. What
a GHEY name. If I saw that CD sitting on the shelf at the college
radio station, I would've totally passed it by. Band names are
important, Tommy. I know you're a big Sugartown reader, but I cannot
stand by that name. I'm sorry.

*I have no idea how to interpret this shit, really. Gimme your Psych 101 theories -- bring it!
Greetings from Chicago! Yep, I moved out here to escape the expen$$$e of NYC. It's great here ... but you know that from your own days. Anyway, speaking of the Replacements, their pal/writer Jim Walsh was just here over the weekend and did a reading of his 'Mats oral history, "All Over But the Shouting." It was good! I guess he's already been in NY to read, but you might want to check out his book.
Oh, and I hear you about Tommy ... I met him (and the rest of the band) when I was 13 and wow, it was a total swoonfest. For me, not for him -- I was really ugly back then! Well, it's true ...

I loved the skyway! The very idea of an aboveground pathway around huge swaths of the city really, really appeals to me. (Then again, Mpls. probably gets so cold in the winter that the skyway is more a necessity than an aesthetic pleasure.)

Actually, Tommy's non GNR stuff is under his own name. "Village [not 'Vintage']Gorilla Head" isn't a shitty band name, it's the shitty album title.
Ever heard the records Tommy Stinson made with his band Perfect? Best post-Mats material anybody in the band put out. "Once, Twice, Three Times a Maybe" is particularly outstanding.
