Okay now for what you came for -- THE MUSIC. I seriously think that my warped views on romance & sex were shaped by some of these damnable, somewhat asexual, screwy indie rocker types. Possible insights to follow...
The Wedding Present -- Brassneck
Oh David Gedge! Someone hurt you once, didn't they? So dour, so brilliant! The Wedding Present sort of grew on me. My love for them didn't blossom immediately -- Gedge's voice isn't pretty per se, but it's totally his.
Versus -- Mirror Mirror
I probably went to see Versus 100 times way back when. Even when I sort of stopped buying their music, I'd still go see them. Their live shows were always excellent. I was always impressed at how much Richard Baluyut could could smoke during a set. He never stopped -- it was nuts
The album The Stars are Insane was a life changer for me. This song is one of my absolute favorites on it -- the lyrics rip a hole in my black heart: "I will not fuck you, I will just carry your books...I know you're only 16 but I need to feel 16..." I mean couldn't you just die?? (collapses into sobbing heap)
I was really into anything put out by Teenbeat, Spin Art, K Records, Slumberland, Kill Rock Stars, Merge, et al & still am. I mean, there's a LOT of solid stuff in those catalogs. It's funny, bands like Unrest, Velocity Girl, Small Factory, Versus, etc intimidated the shit out of me back in the day. I was pretty young & all, but it's hilarious to me now considering that they were only famous to a very small circle of people.
The Pixies -- I've Been Tired
Like everyone else, the Pixies changed the music I listened to. I guess I'd been listening to straight up pop -- fairly formulaic stuff, but this was totally new to me.
Anyway, this song always makes me laugh (same with "Nimrod's Son"). Chock full of rambling, clever lyrics like: "She said 'Let's go, let's sit, let's talk. Politics go so good with beer...& while we're at it baby why don't you tell me one of your biggest fears?' I said 'losing my penis to a whore with disease... just kidding' I said 'losing my life to a whore with disease' she said 'excuse me please?'" Snicker.
Whores. Disease. Beer. Sticking her tongue in his ear, eh? Black Francis introduces the wet willie to inexperienced, impressionable youth. Also, his penis. Scandale!
I have no idea what this tells anyone about me. But stay tuned for the next installment!
