How to Cook the World's Cutest Japanese Mushroom?

101907d Okay FIRST OFF -- Go to SUGARTOWN tonight -- I'm spinning! It will be funnnn (all the info is in that link & in the post below this one).

Yesterday I met a friend for lunch at Tiny's in the L.E.S then we wandered around the rainy streets of Nolita, bitching about how we couldn't afford any of the ridiculously overpriced items at the  fancy boutiques blah blah blah, we stumbled upon a bright yellow storefront bearing the words:  HOW TO COOK DOCOMODAKE?Pileoplush_2

We decided to go inside & were greeted by this gigantic pile of plush mushrooms!  I'm a big fan of Japanese characters, so this was happy surprise. The staff explained that the pile of plushies were all of the products available for this adorable Japanese mushroom character named Docomodake!  (More about the exhibit & Docomodake HERE.)

The exhibit featured several young Japanese artists who interpreted Docomodake in their own style.  It was really fun.  I posted a few pictures of the ones I thought were especially neat.   Try to catch it asap because it ends on Sunday Oct 28th!

A couple of songs that have something to do with Japan or Asia but not really anything to do with this post:

Spinto Band - Japan is an Island
I love these kids -- they write some excellent pop tunes.  I just might have to go check them out at Bowery Ballroom on Nov 30th in NYC.  Maybe you should too!

Guided by Voices - Asia Minor
I've always had a soft spot for GBV but damned if I could ever keep up with every little song they put out over their career.  I mean, I'm all for songs that are 3 minutes or less but these guys have songs that are seconds long...being a superfan always seemed like too much work.  For me anyway.

Pizzicato 5 - Twiggy Twiggy
The first song I'd ever heard by Pizzicato 5 -- loved it.  It's a lil' spazzy for my current, much more refined (read: OLD LADY) tastes but it captures the spirit of the awesomely free-spiritedness of the cute Japanimation characters!

Gawd, I am such a consumer. Don't judge me.

But I know what you're wondering -- WHO (or WTF) IS DOCOMODAKE??

According to Wikipedia (in a post that seems to have been written by a Japanese writer working for NTT Docomo):
" Docomodake is a kind of mascot by NTT Docomo group (mobile phone leading company) in Japan. They debuted in January 2005.

The origin of the name is a following, "dake" has two meanings in Japanese, one is "only", other is "mushroom" (When you call the species of any mushroom, you can call dake, or take)..."

MustoneAll of the Docomodake exhibit photos were snagged

from some guy named WATZ's
Flickr page. Thanks for posting those photos -- this would've been rilly hard to explain without them.
