Bryce & I went to see the Jesus & Mary Chain last night at Webster Hall here in NYC.
Overall it was a good show & I'm very glad that I went but it was NOT LOUD ENOUGH! I dunno if this was a decision on the band's part or on the soundman's part but it was definitely NOT loud. In fact, people in the audience were yelling "TURN IT UP!" & "LOUDER!" pretty much the whole time (but I'm not sure if JAMC guys could tell what they were saying).
That said, Jim's voice sounded perfect & he still has that charisma (meaning he's still adorable). & William's keeping it real with his still-massive coif & blazing guitar skillz. The audience was happy & enthusiastic. AND I DIDN'T SEE ONE GOTH/VAMPYRE TYPE, which is incredible. If only it had been just a bit louder. Ah well.
Jesus & Mary Chain -- Drop (They didn't play this one but it's sooo good)
Jesus & Mary Chain -- Some Candy Talking (They played this & I overheard several people say "ahh this one is my favorite!"
Jesus & Mary Chain -- Taste of Cindy (Also played this one)
From Wikipedia:
"The Jesus and Mary Chain's early gigs have become somewhat legendary
in indie circles. Playing in front of small audiences, the Mary Chain
earned their notoriety by playing very short gigs, some lasting no more
than 10 minutes and consisting of a constant wall of feedback and
distortion, as well as playing with their backs to the audience and
refusing to speak to them. Many shows culminated with the Reids
trashing their equipment, which was often followed by the audience rioting. All of this delighted manager and Creation Records boss Alan McGee, who obviously found it very easy to get attention for the band. He
would simply make sure people from the music press were present while
these events occurred, which ensured blanket coverage in the music
papers...
According to Anthony Kiedis' autobiography 'Scar Tissue' The Jesus and Mary Chain were renowned for their bad behaviour on the second Lollapalooza tour. In Kiedis' own words: 'The whole show was a lovefest except for the Jesus and Mary Chain, this British group, who were just bitter. They'd polish off a giant bottle of booze by two in the afternoon and curse and put everyone down. One time they went too far with the guys from Ice Cube's band, and they got themselves a beating.'"
HA -- I would give anything to see them getting into it with Ice Cube's guys. Holy shit!
Here's the band's MySpace page! You can also totally become friends with Jim & William via their personal MySpace pages!
VIDEOS:
This is a pretty bad quality video but if you can get through it, it has some excellent & hilarious moments. Ah this is a wonderful interview with Jim from 1987. Here's an appearance on Letterman from years ago that's especially great because of the totally out of place funky bass player dude -- I love him! And in this clip you can see the Reid brothers get a little fussy with each other while discussing Morrissey.
A TRIP BACK TO MEMORY LANE:
You Trip Me Up
Just Like Honey
April Skies
Happy When it Rains
Darklands
Sometimes Always (with Hope Sandoval)
Thank you! I didn't know they picked up on it until I saw your comment.

I watched the woman in front of me type this text into her phone:
"This is totally like flying back to 1988. I am so happy right now!".

Some produce a rather weak argument that it's a waste of money to buy an analogue adapter, but they clearly don't realise how little analogue adapters cost. It's like worrying about a radio having AM and FM when you only want to listen to FM. Realizing how extensive our universe really is amazes me. Knowing that God is bigger than all of that, and created the known and unknown is overwhelming. All I can add is that He is awesome!

It's bizarre that they weren't loud enough. When I saw them on Lollapalooza, they were psychotically loud. They also let some feedback loop for about 15 minutes afterwards. Even with earplugs, it was goddamn loud.
