Even Better than the Real Thing?
Lately I've stumbled across some really excellent covers... I'm sure this will be a recurring theme because I'm finding LOTS of great ones! And, because I'm such a giver, I'm going to share them with YOU, gentle reader. (But because I'm lazy, I urge you to seek out the bands yourselves without me having to post links. I'm sleepy, I'm sorry.)
FLATTERING IMITATIONS
THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH -- Don't Fear the Reaper
So great. I love this.
DREAM ACADEMY - Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want
OMG -- It's totally when Ferris & Sloane are making out at the Met I mean at the Art Institute of Chicago (duh!). Poor Cameron is all alone with "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte"...Dude, that guy got a raw deal. (This also made an amazing bride walking down the aisle song at my friends Pearl & Chris's wedding. Seriously, it was great.)
YO LA TENGO - Be Thank ful for What You've Got
"Diamond in the back, sunroof top, digging the scene with a gangster lean" -- 'nuff said. (Originally by MFSB.)
TOWA TEI -- Private eyes
I love the Hall & Oates version but this one is actually super smooth, super cool & kinda sexy.
SANDIE SHAW -- I Don't Owe You Anything
Aw wow - The Smiths version of this song is a favorite but I love this cover too. Sandie's got great style.
OF MONTREAL -- Colour Me In
I've posted this song before -- way back when I did a Of Montreal post...but it's so adorable that it should be posted again. The Broadcast version is lovely but this one is a sweet, simple little lullabye.
DUMP -- Pop Life
This is James McNew from Yo La Tengo's side project. Just try to say that this isn't lovely...I dare you. Okay, you're a liar.
BEN FOLDS -- Biches Ain't Shit
I KNOW it's Ben Folds, but it's pretty genius. Admit it. I mean, this is a Dr Dre song -- can you believe it?
CAT POWER -- I Found a Reason
Holy shit. This cover slayed me the first time I heard it... & I definitely prefer it to Lou Reed's original version. There, I said it (Blasphemy!)
MARK KOZELEK -- Up to My Neck in You
Who knew that AC/DC could be interpreted in such a beautiful way? Mark K (of Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon) is the KING of the beautiful cover. Seriously, have you ever heard RHP's cover of KISS's "Shock Me"??
HEY DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE THE BUSY SIGNALS CD "BABY'S FIRST BEATS" BY ANY CHANCE?? I've got a major hankering to hear a couple of songs on it...help!

where can i get the hall and oats - private eyes (towa tei remix) track?? thanx!!!

Is there any way you could re-post the (Don't Fear) The Reaper song? I collect different versions of it and I don't think I've heard that one yet. Thank you.

Ah, so close! I've been searching for the Dream Academy instrumental version of Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want for ages, is that the one you had, or the one with the lyrics. The link isn't working, such sadness!

That 'Reaper' cover was amazing – this was always such a 'naughty' song back in the catholic school days....
